Diversity at Sequoia
Sequoia's community is known for its diversity, and welcomes diversity of all kinds. Families speak a wide range of languages, representing both immigrant and educated parents. Parents may be millionaires, homeless, or anywhere in between. Physical abilities range from wheelchair to track star, and intellectual abilities range from accelerated to autistic, and all are valued. Students observe a range of religions and identify with a variety of cultural norms, and every class is made up of a variety of races. (See links on the about page for details.) Furthermore, everyone has their own opinion!
In Classrooms
What the students all have in common is learning. Sequoia's staff is well-trained in diversity issues, and do all they can to validate each student's experience. Our first school rule is to respect everyone. Our Second Step and Conflict Resolution programs help teach social skills that help children find ways to interact respectfully. Instruction, assemblies, and field trips continually give students opportunities to learn about different cultures and experiences.
In the Community
Special events such as the Multicultural Potluck/Program allow the community to fully indulge in the riches of our diversity, and the Multicultural Committee works to bring alternate perspectives to all celebrations and events. Involvment at Sequoia allows parents the opportunity to learn, as well. Parents are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and reach across cultural lines, both to support their children and to find their own rewards. Members of all parent groups work to continually improve communication and find ways to be inclusive.
