Principal Katia Hazen

Dear Sequoia Families,

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year!  As the new principal of Sequoia, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with several parent committees over the summer.  I’m proud to be joining a community that prioritizes education and understands that children thrive when they experience the arts and sciences as an integral part of schooling.

I’ve been a teacher with Oakland Unified since 1995.  For the last four years, I’ve served as a Teacher on Special Assignment at Futures Elementary in East Oakland, working to strengthen relationships with some of the city’s most underserved families. I’m dedicated to the OUSD idea of full-service community schools. As a parent of two daughters (12 and 10 years old), I’m constantly reminded that every child is someone’s miracle.  I’m married to a proud graduate of Oakland High and believe that OUSD’s great strength lies in our diversity.

I’m looking forward to connecting with your children, learning what makes school wonderful and challenging for them and how I can support them in their learning. Please introduce yourself to me as many times as it takes until I learn your name. Set a goal of introducing yourself to a parent you’ve never talked to and learning their name, too. Our community is strongest when we know not only each other’s names, but our hopes and dreams for our children.

Yours in Learning,

Katia
